Community Outreach
Rachel’s dedication and devotion to her job have earned her numerous awards, but it is her leadership in and outside of the newsroom which make her stand out. Rachel is a former 4-H Diamond Star (similar to the rank of Eagle Scout). She earned the title as a teen, after ten years of hard work in the 4-H program. The award was based on public speaking, project work and community service. Ever since then, Rachel has been mentoring 4-H youth and advisors by volunteering for various 4-H groups.
Rachel has been instrumental in reviving the Orleans Parish 4-H Program, which all but disappeared after Hurricane Katrina. In fall 2008 She organized the Broadmoor Helping Hands 4-H Club, setting up monthly meetings, orchestrating project groups and connecting youth with leadership opportunities across the region.
Previously, Rachel worked with a select team of Delaware 4-Hers traveling to Bosnia on an exchange program. She headed up a media training workshop that included a seminar on interview skills where 4-H’ers were taped on camera and critiqued. Rachel and her husband produced a video for the team that will be used for outreach overseas.
Over the years Rachel has also volunteered for the American Cancer Society, Alzheimer’s Association, Susan G. Komen Foundation and various humane societies.
